Occupational Therapy Driving Assessments
We provide comprehensive occupational therapy driver assessments for adults who have a medical condition, disability or age-related change that may affect driving safety.
Driving assessments may be required by:

Queensland Transport

Medical practitioners

NDIS or funding bodies

Family or the individual
Assessments are conducted in line with Austroads Assessing Fitness to Drive guidelines.
Learner Driver Assessments
Assessment for people with disability or medical conditions who wish to:

Begin learning to drive
-
Identify vehicle modifications
-
Understand supports required to learn safely
Includes assessment of:
-
Physical, cognitive and sensory skills
-
Equipment or vehicle modification needs
Older Driver Assessments
Assessment for older adults to:
-
Review ongoing fitness to drive
-
Address concerns raised by family or medical practitioners
-
Explore strategies to continue driving safely
Medical / Disability Driving Assessments
Assessment for people with conditions such as:

Neurological conditions
-
Physical disability
-
Cognitive impairment
-
Mental health conditions
Includes:

Clinical assessment

On-road assessment (where appropriate)

Clear recommendations and reporting

Assessment Process
The initial driving assessment involves:
2 hour off-road occupational therapy assessment in clinic or client's home, looking at:

Medical background and driving history
-
Physical function including movement, strength and coordination vision
-
Safety, judgement and decision-making skills in relation to driving
-
Road Law knowledge
1 hour on road occupational therapy assessment with rehabilitation driving instructor:
-
Conducted in the driving instructor’s dual controlled
automatic or manual vehicle. -
Vehicle is fitted with modifications (e.g. spinner knob, left foot accelerator, and hand controls) for clients needing to trial these.

Outcome of Assessment
The initial driving assessment involves:
Pass:
Medical condition does not impact on driving – once you have been to the GP to gain medical clearance and new QLD Transport medical certificate, you are safe to drive!
Fail:
Medical condition does impact on driving, and you are not safe to drive.
License to be cancelled.
Rehab and Modification:
Lessons are required to learn to use modifications and Occupational Therapy driving re-assessment may be required to determine safety to drive.
